Set Up Your Child's Playroom to Support Language

Did you know that you can set-up your child’s playroom to support their speech and language?

Play is so important for your child and can lead to lots of great language opportunities! You can set-up their environment to encourage language by making just a few tweaks.

  • Prioritize purchasing toys that allow for pretend play and don’t make a lot of noise. This can give your child the opportunity to fill in their own words and sound effects. It also gives them the freedom to use their own imagination!

  • Use clear bins to sort toys by categories! This helps keep everything organized and give you the opportunity to model words like “open”, “close” and “help”. I love using wait time with tough to open containers! I will say “let’s” and pause for at least five seconds to see if they will fill in the next word!

  • Rotate the toys that are available. Too many toys out at one time can be overwhelming and lead to the child quickly jumping from one activity to the next. Rotating toys also keeps things novel and exciting!

  • Have a bookshelf or bookcase on your child’s level! Literacy and a love of reading should be encouraged as early as possible. Use board books or indestructible books if they aren’t quite ready for regular picture books. They can look at the books on their own or read with you!
